1995 Engineering Excellence Achievement Award
Interstate Route 81 Restoration
CECO Associates, Inc. received a 1995 Engineering Excellence Achievement Award
from the Consulting Engineers Council of Pennsylvania for the design of the rehabilitation and
restoration of a twelve (12) mile segment of Interstate Route 81 in Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties,
Pennsylvania. The work included the complete restoration of the southbound lanes with new concrete
pavement and shoulders, construction of truck climbing lanes, the removal of 500,000 cubic yards of
unstable rock, the installation of rock anchors and other slope stabilization measures, and the
rehabilitation design of twelve (12) overhead bridges. The work included the infrared imaging of
these bridge decks to determine the extent of delamination and to evaluate the extent of the repair
work required. This $22 million Interstate Restoration Project was completed over two construction
seasons and will serve the traveling public well into the next millennium.
